Everyone dreams about a safe, dry and beautiful home. Unfortunately some properties suffer from several problems which may create damp and condensation. The most common problem is rising or penetrating damp or inefficient, faulty or missing ventilation.
1. Rising damp is a very slow process when ground water infiltrates (by capillary action) foundations and lower parts of the wall. Rising damp is more severe in older buildings and usually observed within or below ground level.
Rising damp usually affects properties where the DPC (damp proof course) is missing or damaged and high level of ground waters is present. There are well documented cases of damp rising up to 5-6m which affects the whole wall structure including external and internal finishes.
The most obvious effects of rising damp are: wet or damp marks on the wall, broken, lose or deteriorated render, plaster, paint or wallpaper; damaged skirting boards and floor finishes.
Another alarming point is a “damp or wet smell” as well as salt marks and rusted steel elements.
Rising damp is a serious issue which can affect the structure of the property, decreasing its thermal and acoustic properties.
Uncontrolled damp promotes and accelerates the growth of mould. Moulds and fungi can be responsible for serious diseases including asthma and cancer, especially when they become airborne.
